The oldest city in the
country, founded in 1525. It is in the north of the country, 1 hour
by plane from Bogotá.
Santa Marta is a very tranquil city with a population of approximately
500,000 inhabitants and much attractive history including:
- The oldest cathedral in South America built in 1766.
- La Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, a beautiful villa with surrounding
gardens where Simón Bolívar (Liberator of America) died
and which has been converted into a museum.
- The gold museum which exhibits numerous treasures of Tyrona culture. |
